Synergistic Protection of Chilled Canine Spermatozoa by Apigenin and N-Acetylcysteine Amide

Sperm cryopreservation is a crucial technique in assisted reproduction, both in humans and animals. However, the freezing and thawing process can cause oxidative damage and mitochondrial dysfunction in spermatozoa, which can affect their viability and fertility. A recent study published in the PubMed database has investigated the effect of apigenin and N-acetylcysteine amide on the protection of chilled canine spermatozoa. Apigenin is a flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while N-acetylcysteine amide is a compound with antioxidant activity and protective effects on mitochondrial function. The study results showed that the combination of apigenin and N-acetylcysteine amide provided synergistic protection to chilled canine spermatozoa, improving their survival and fertility. This was due to the improvement of antioxidant defense and mitochondrial function, which reduced oxidative stress and apoptosis in spermatozoa. These findings have important implications for assisted reproduction in animals and could have applications in human reproductive medicine. The synergistic protection of apigenin and N-acetylcysteine amide could be a valuable strategy to improve the quality and viability of frozen-thawed spermatozoa, which could increase fertility rates and reduce the risk of miscarriages and congenital malformations.
